Falkirk move up as Hamilton slip but Morton are still the top dogs

Morton manager Allan Moore’s mood will have lifted slightly on Saturday evening as his Greenock side remained in the top spot of a sardine tin-tight First Division. All ten sides are separated by only six points following Hamilton Accies’ 1-0 defeat to visitors Falkirk.

Moore’s men went down 5-0 at Partick Thistle on Friday night, but, despite that heavy loss, the Cappielow side still sit at the summit of the tightest league in the country even with a goal difference of minus-two.

Hamilton failed to move upwards as they lost at home for the first time this season, while the Bairns left New Douglas Park having secured a 1-0 win thanks to talismanic striker Farid El Alagui. He scored the match-winner six minutes before half-time, heading a Kieran Duffie cross past Thomas Cerny

The Accies huffed and puffed as they tried to get level, and striker Dougie Imrie had a great chance in the dying seconds of the game, but he fired wide from close range.

Falkirk boss Steven Pressley beamed: “Our young players continue to over achieve and I am delighted with them. We will take confidence from beating the pre-season favourites, but I am not going to set any targets.”

Disappointed Hamilton manager Billy Reid said: “We are going through a frustrating time just now. We dominated parts of the game, but were pretty dire in the final third.”

Ross County have quietly moved up the table in recent weeks and they now occupy second spot after a 4-0 home success over Ayr United made it six games in a row unbeaten for Derek Adams’ side.

The points looked to be staying in the Highlands as early as the fifth minute when Richard Brittain shot home and Paul Lawson made it two with just over an hour played.

Summer signing striker Sam Morrow scored his first goal for the Dingwall side to make it three, before Iain Vigurs capped a man-of-the-match performance when he slid in to convert a Kurtis Byrne cross and complete the scoring.

Livingston showed that their unbeaten home run that stretches back 18 months is not a record that they will give up easily as they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Raith Rovers. The Kirkcaldy side also showed their own battling qualities as they fought back from the early dismissal of defender Dougie Hill for a crude challenge on Kyle Jacobs to take the lead.

Brian Graham volleyed the ten men ahead on the hour mark after former Lion Allan Walker had picked him out. Livi substitute Marc McNulty took his side’s unbeaten home run to 26 games when he converted an Iain Russell cross within a minute of coming on and with 25 minutes still to play.

Queen of the South and Dundee had started the day in the bottom two positions in the league and they played out a goalless draw at Palmerston. The point gained did, however, enable both sides to move up a place at the expense of Ayr.

It was the Dark Blues that came closest to winning when substitute Ryan Conroy sent a volley goalward; however, home shot-stopper Lee Robinson saved well to keep the scoreline blank.
