Ex-Rangers defender Daniel Prodan dies aged 44 - reports

Former Rangers player Daniel Prodan has died of a sudden heart attack, age 44, according to reports in his native Romania.

The news was broken was local journalist Dorin Chiotea, who made an emotional post on Facebook.

He said: “Daniel Prodan died a few hours ago of a heart attack !!! He was 44. I was a great friend and his premature end grieves me deeply. It is the worst exclusive news in my career.

“The tragedy occurred in the Romania player’s house. The collapse was seen by his wife, Licinia, who called for help.

“The paramedics reached him in 14 minutes. Doctors tried to resuscitate him but unfortunately he succumbed to a heart attack.

“God rest his soul!”

Prodan tallied 54 caps for Romania and represented his nation at both the 1994 World Cup and Euro 96.

He signed for Rangers in 1998 for a fee of £2.2million. However, it was later discovered he signed without a medical and was carrying a knee injury from his time with Atletico Madrid.

He left Ibrox in 2001 having failed to play a single game for the first-team.
