Everton 3-1 Oldham: Everton ease past Latics

EVERTON booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals and ended Oldham’s memorable run with a routine victory.

Scorers: Everton: Mirallas (15), Baines (34 pen), Osman (62); Oldham: Smith (64)

The Latics had raced into the lead during their 3-2 triumph over Liverpool in round four and against David Moyes’ men in a dramatic 2-2 draw ten days ago. But Everton put their League One opponents under pressure from the first whistle this time and Kevin Mirallas, preferred in attack to Steven Naismith, got the breakthrough when he converted Darron Gibson’s excellent 15th-minute cross.

Leighton Baines’ penalty made it 2-0 at the interval after Connor Brown handled.

Oldham cup hero Matt Smith – Liverpool and Everton’s chief tormentor in those memorable Boundary Park ties – came off the bench to grab his fourth goal of the cup run but, by then, Leon Osman had ensured the Toffees’ passage into the next round and a home tie against Wigan.
