England v Scotland: Where to watch, kick-off time, likely line-ups

Considering recent poor form, Gordon Strachan’s team could not have come up against a tougher opponent than the top seeded side in Group F.

However, England have been far from convincing in their matches thus far, and Scots remain hopeful of an unlikely upset.

Here’s everything you need to know about the game...

Kick-off time: 7.45pm

Where to watch: STV (7.15pm programme start)

Probable England team: Hart; Walker, Cahill, Stones, Rose; Dier, Henderson; Lallana, Rooney, Sterling; Kane.

Team news: Harry Kane could come straight back into the side, even though the Tottenham striker only recently came back from an ankle injury. Wayne Rooney will be guaranteed a start having been named captain and will likely play just in behind Kane with Dele Alli missing through injury.

Probable Scotland team: Marshall; Paterson, Martin, Hanley, Wallace; Brown, D. Fletcher; Burke, Snodgrass, Ritchie; S. Fletcher.

Team news: Lee Wallace and Stephen Kingsley will battle it out in training for the left-back spot after both Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney were ruled out through injury within the last few weeks. Scott Brown is likely to start having completed a U-turn on his international career, though James McArthur and Barry Bannan are also in contention. Fans pushing for Leigh Griffiths to start are likely to be disappointed.

Referee: Cüneyt Çakir (Turkey)

Key England player: Wayne Rooney. Criticism of England’s all-time leading goalscorer in recent months has certained around his adjustment to a deeper role in the team and whether he slows down play too much. The home captain doesn’t necessarily have to put in a great performance against Scotland, he just has to ensure his side play as a team instead of a group of individuals, with his own display key to avoiding such issues.

Key Scotland player: Scott Brown. It would make little sense for Brown to be brought back into the squad and not used from the start against England. He’s been in excellent form of late for Celtic, and if he can replicate the performances at home to Manchester City and away to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League, then Scotland have a puncher’s chance.
