JOE HART: After a man-of-the-match showing in Slovenia, this was a gentler evening at the office but he will be pleased with a fourth successive clean sheet. 6

KYLE WALKER: Drove England on with an athletic, hungry showing at right-back and provided a fine cross for Daniel Sturridge’s opening goal. 8

JOHN STONES: Seemed ill-suited to the frenetic pace of the first half and became a target for Scottish pressing. Improved as England’s lead grew and the nerves eased. 5

GARY CAHILL: Attacked the ball well to grab England’s third goal but also picked up a booking and will miss the next qualifier. Not always at ease with the slow build from the back. 6

DANNY ROSE: An intermittent but effervescent presence on the left. Teed-up the second goal and won the corner for the third but looked beatable in defensive situations. 7

ERIC DIER: Perhaps the game was just too British for this product of the Portuguese system. Never quite settled into the tempo and might have done a better job on Robert Snodgrass. 6

JORDAN HENDERSON: Enjoyed a much stronger second half and began to assert himself on the midfield area that Scotland had targeted. Still growing as a leader at international level. 7

RAHEEM STERLING: Will not wish to see his point-blank miss any time soon but even though the inconsistent end product remains a concern, his direct running and boundless energy did much to push Scotland onto the back foot. 7

ADAM LALLANA: Took 27 games to open his Three Lions account but now has two in as many games. A graceful header to beat Craig Gordon and is also an ever-willing worker and was always on hand to offer his team-mates an option. 8

WAYNE ROONEY: Gareth Southgate talked up his captain’s experience as he restored him to an attacking midfield role but, barring an assist from the corner flag, this was another deeply muddled outing for a distinguished player who no longer seems certain of his game. 5

DANIEL STURRIDGE: Showed sharp awareness and technique to flash Walker’s cross home from six yards. Drifted on occasion, as he is liable to do, but his finishing prowess was crucial in settling English nerves. 7

SUBSTITUTES:

JAMIE VARDY (for Sturridge, 75): A peripheral presence since Euro 2016 but did his best to inject some life into the remainder of a game that had already been settled. 6
