Edinburgh close in on the Uni title

Edinburgh UNIVERSITY strengthened their grip on the Scottish Universities football championship when the beat Glasgow University 2-0 in a closely-contested match at Peffermill yesterday.

Edinburgh lead the table by three points from Capital rivals Heriot-Watt University who also won 2-1 against the Edinburgh University Second Xl. The results mean that the final game between Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt will decide the outcome of this season’s championship.

Edinburgh took an early lead against Glasgow when, after a Roy Chatterjee cross, Jack Beacher turned to hammer home a 12-yard shot. Edinburgh increased their advantage when Chatterjeee, who had an impressive all-round game, had a shot which the Glasgow goalkeeper blocked, but the Edinburgh striker reacted quickly to steer the rebound into the net from an acute angle.

“We were delighted to come away with the win and another clean sheet,” said Edinburgh University head coach Douglas Samuel. “The win keeps us in pole position in the championship which now looks like it’s going to be an all-or-nothing game against Heriot-Watt on the 12th of March.”
