The lights were switched on by businessman Sir Tom Farmer, a major Hibs shareholder, who grew up near Hibs’ Easter Road stadium in Leith, and the club’s chairman Rod Petrie ahead of the match today.

They were joined by representatives from Hibernian in the Community and some young fans from the St Ninian’s Youth Club.

Petrie said “It’s great that Edinburgh Airport is showing its support for Hibernian by turning the control tower green and that some young Hibernian supporters have had the chance to switch on the lights.

“We hope that [the Hampden final] brings the day we all want to enjoy.”

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “It’s hugely exciting to see an Edinburgh team reach the Scottish Cup Final and we wanted to show Hibs our support by lighting our tower green for the occasion.

“Playing a role in our local community is hugely important to us at Edinburgh Airport.

“It’s great that we can be part of the event and start the weekend in style.

“We have our fingers crossed for a good result.”

Two-time Scottish Cup winners Hibs missed out on winning glory last year in a 5-1 defeat to local rivals Heart of Midlothian.

The last time Hibernian FC won the Scottish Cup was in 1902, when they beat Celtic 1-0 at the Glasgow club’s home ground, thanks to a 75th-minute Andy McGeachan goal.
