East of Scotland League: Spartans tighten grip on top spot as rivals falter

Spartans maintained their push for a fourth consecutive Central Taxis Premier Division title with a 3-1 win over Vale of Leithen, while their nearest challengers, Whitehill Welfare and Stirling University, both lost.

Spartans took an early lead through Robbie Manson before Alasdair MacKinnon and Chris Anderson added further goals, with Jamie Lauder scoring Vale’s consolation. Whitehill lost 3-2 to Lothian Thistle after a stoppage-time goal from Joe Murray. Mike Herd and Willie Kidd struck for Whitehill, with Lothian’s first two coming from Connor McDiarmid and Lloyd Dignan.

Stirling University crashed 4-2 to Civil Service Strollers, with goals from Craig Anderson, Scott Gormley and Craig Dickson (two) while Chris McKee and Danny Denholm netted for the students. Gretna 2008 drew 2-2 with visitors Leith Athletic, while, in the First Division, Coldstream beat Heriot Watt University 3-1 and Easthouses Lily defeated Hawick Royal Albert 3-0.
