East Kilbride FC racked up their 26th win in a row at the weekend after managing a late comeback against Lowland League rivals Vale of Leven to win 4-2.

And their winning run, which matches the Johan Cruyff-inspired Ajax team effort of the 1971-72 season, even earned a congratulatory message from the record holders.

After the weekend win the club immediately took to social media to express their joy at matching the world record, but could not have expected to receive a message from Ajax.

The Dutch club congratulated East Kilbride on Twitter, saying: “Great job guys. Well done, 26 wins in a row.”

East Kilbride will now look to smash the record and claim it for themselves on Saturday.

Their record is unlikely to receive official recognition as the Lowland League is not a senior tournament.

The club’s manager Martin Lauchlan won’t let that stop his team though and wants to maintain their winning ways.

He said: “For part-time players it’s a terrific record, it’s not just unbeaten – it’s wins, the boys have been fantastic for me since I took over.

“We’ll keep the run going.”
