The former Hibs and Celtic striker has made a real impact since arriving as a trialist in Methil - creating the second in Tuesday night’s game with East Stirlingshire and then hitting the winner at the weekend as East Fife beat Annan.

But SPFL rules state that a trialist can only play three games for the one club, meaning that Riordan’s future will have to be sorted out sooner rather than later.

East Fife boss Gary Naysmith told the Mail: “Derek has agreed to play his third game as a trialist for us against Elgin on Tuesday night.

“We’ve made him an offer and told him what we can afford to do and he’s come back to us saying that he’d like to play his third game first, so we have to respect that.

“In the two games he’s played he’s showed what he is capable of.

“He still wants to play at a higher level but hopefully the way he’s been welcomed to the club by the fans and the players will help our cause a bit.”

Riordan arrived at the club after spending a period training with Livingston where he was not offered a deal.

The striker has previously been playing with Alloa and Brechin City.
