East Fife chairman accuses SPL on reconstruction

EAST Fife chairman Sid Collumbine believes league reconstruction has no chance of being voted through and has accused the Scottish Premier League of only looking after themselves.

As serious doubts grow over the prospect of a new 12-12-18 set-up being in place for next season, the Second Division club’s chairman is far from happy about the timescale. Plans include a greater distribution of wealth and a merger of the SPL and Scottish Football League.

First Division clubs have threatened to form a SPL2 if the proposals are voted down, with Peterhead warning that lower league clubs would be forgotten about unless the initial plans are backed.

Speaking ahead of an SPL vote on 15 April, Collumbine said: “I have always been of the opinion that things should not be changed mid-stream.

“All of this is motivated by desperation from the First Division and SPL clubs.

“But it’s essentially a takeover by the SPL. Those at the top will just dump the teams they don’t want.

“The way they (the SPL) are putting it together is for their own interests and I can’t see it going through.

“I’m expecting it to be a crazy fortnight but everybody seems to be looking after themselves and that’s not the way forward.”
