Ray McKinnon insists he remains hopeful of concluding a deal to snap up freed Hibs midfielder Fraser Fyvie as he prepares to add a fifth signing to his revamped Dundee United squad.

The United manager confirmed he is in talks with Fyvie over a move to Tannadice after Hibs took the offer of a deal off the table for the former Aberdeen and Wigan player.

It would be another high calibre signing for the Championship side following the recruitment of St Johnstone defender Tam Scobbie, Hibs striker James Keatings and wingers Billy King and Paul McMullan. McKinnon is keen to work with a squad of 18 first-team players all capable of making an impact as he bids to steer the Tayside club back to the Premiership.

And, with former Motherwell and Ross County defender Paul Quinn training with United at their St Andrews base, McKinnon is satisfied with the way his preparations are going for the new campaign.

He said: “Recruitment is going well. We’re close to signing somebody and we’re in talks with a few players, so everything is going well.

“We’re actively looking to bring in new signings. Talks are on-going with a few
players just now and there’s a couple in on trial as well.

“We’re in talks with Fraser Fyvie’s representatives and when we’ve got something to say we’ll make it public.

“Paul Quinn is in training. He looks great in training but he’s just asked for training facilities and we’re happy to give him them.”

A goalkeeper to compete with skipper Cammy Bell and at least two strikers to join Keatings in attack are the priorities for McKinnon in the coming days and weeks. But the Tannadice manager admits he feels more at ease with the way his squad overhaul is progressing this year.

“This is more my team now – definitely – and that’s no disrespect to those we had here last season,” he said. “I’m very happy with the signings I’ve made so far, and I would like to add another three or four, which we will do. We’re hopeful of getting one concluded shortly.”
