The 26-year-old has penned a two-year contract with the Pittodrie side.

Aberdeen are able to register one player ahead of Wednesday night’s Uefa deadline and it means that Mackay-Steven is eligible to play in Aberdeen’s Europa League tie against NK Siroki Brijeg on Thursday.

Thurso-born Mackay-Steven has been capped once for Scotland. He began his career as a youth player with Ross County where he caught the eye of Liverpool. He joined the Anfield club but failed to make the breakthrough.

He returned to Scotland to play for Airdrie United, then won a move to Dundee United before joining Celtic in January 2015.

Aberdeen have announced that Mackay-Steven will be given squad number 11. He is manager Derek McInnes’ fifth signing of the summer following the arrival of Greg Tansey, Ryan Christie, Greg Stewart and Nicky Maynard.
