Division Three: Drama as Queen’s strike late to move into second

Late goals changed the outcome of all three matches played, with Queen’s Park ending the night in second place thanks to their 1-0 win at Montrose.

The Gable Endies had offered stiff resistance and looked to be seeing things out despite the sending off of Paul Lunan with 17 minutes to go but striker Jamie Longworth had other ideas and converted a pass from substitute Owen Ronald with a minute left.

There was also late drama as Elgin’s run of four successive wins, that had lifted them into fourth place, came to an end, with their game against Clyde finishing 1-1.

The Bully Wee had been the only side to triumph at City’s Morayshire stronghold this season, when they won 3-0 back in September and they came close to repeating that before Elgin’s 40-year-old player/assistant boss Barry Wilson scored a minute from time.

Elgin had the majority of the early pressure. However, despite a host of chances they could not make a breakthrough and they were stunned when their visitors broke the deadlock eight minutes from half-time.

On-loan Motherwell youngster Jamie Pollok crashed home a left-foot shot from the edge of the box and it looked like it would end that way until substitute Wilson’s late intervention.

Berwick Rangers and Peterhead looked to have cancelled each other out in a stalemate at Shielfield before Martin Bavidge popped up with a headed winner for the Balmoor side seven minutes from time to make it 1-0.

The result all but ends Berwick’s play-off hopes.
