Diego Maradona: Andy Murray reveals note left for him on Argentinian football top by late superstar

Scottish tennis player and former world number one, Andy Murray, has paid tribute to Diego Maradona by revealing a note the football legend left for him on an Argentinian football shirt which predicted he would go on to become ‘número uno’ in tennis.

As many paid their respects to the football legend who passed away aged 60 due to a cardiac arrest, Scottish tennis pro Andy Murray took to Instagram to show his respects for the icon.

The tennis star reflected on the first time he met Maradona at the O2 arena, having an unintelligible conversation with the ‘larger than life’ football legend who spoke in Spanish with what the Scot claimed was ‘unbelievable, energy, passion and expression.’

Murray said: “I was lucky enough to meet Maradona once at the 02 arena. He had come to watch the tennis there. He spoke to me for a couple of minutes in Spanish with unbelievable energy, passion and expression.

Murray shows off the Argentinian shirt the football icon gave to him before going on to become tennis world number one.

"Unfortunately I barely understood a word but that didn’t seem to matter he was diminutive in size but clearly a larger than life character/personality with a tonne of charisma.”

The tennis Star then told his fans that the only words he understood from the conversation were ‘número uno.’

The next day, Murray found that Maradona had left him a signed Argentinian football shirt addressed to his ‘amigo Andy Murray’ with a message which expressed he wanted Murray to become ‘número uno’ in tennis.

Translated, it read: “To my friend Andy with all my love and hope that you soon become #1.”

As Maradona predicted, the three-time Grand Slam champ did so in 2016.
