Derek Adams takes over at Plymouth Argyle

Former Ross County boss Derek Adams will return to football today following a nine-month gap when he is appointed as the manager of English League Two side Plymouth.

Adams, who turns 40 later this month, has seen off competition from former St Johnstone boss Steve Lomas as well as Brighton and Hove Albion coach Matt Jones to land the job, completing a 650-mile journey from Dingwall to Home Park.

Plymouth parted company with former Republic of Ireland internationalist John Sheridan last month after they lost out in the promotion play-offs and have opted for Adams.

Under Adams, County rose from the third level of Scottish football to the top six of the Premiership as well as reaching the Scottish Cup final of 2010.

A slow start to last season led to a parting of the ways and despite being linked to a number of clubs on this side of the Border, Adams will follow in the footsteps of Paul Sturrock and Bobby Williamson and take charge of the Pilgrims.

Adams said: “It has been a frustrating time. However, I am looking forward to starting work at Plymouth Argyle.”

l Brechin City have appointed Darren Dods as their new player/manager to replace Ray McKinnon, who left for Raith Rovers last month.

The 40-year-old Forfar centre-back, who missed out on the Cowdenbeath job recently, saw off competition from a host of applicants including former Scotland striker Scott Booth.

The former Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Dundee United and Falkirk player said: “I welcome the opportunity to manage Brechin City. I have experienced what the club has to offer in our battles over the past two seasons and I greatly look forward to meeting and working with the players who have already demonstrated their commitment to the club as we look to build a squad for the new season.”
