David Weir: Scotland can't ignore Rangers stars next season

Rangers assistant manager David Weir has backed the club's home grown players to break into the Scotland squad next season.

Not a single member of the Ibrox first-team found a place in Gordon Strachan’s squad for the friendly double-header against Czech Republic and Denmark. This was despite the Scotland boss selecting an enlarged pool of 33 players across the two games.

Mark Warburton has already stated his incredulity regarding the snubs, believing that many of his stars have shown themselves to be good enough, even if they were honing their craft at a lower league.

Weir understands why Strachan has elected not to pick any of the Rangers squad, due to their place in the Ladbrokes Championship, but feels such a decision will become much harder once Rangers are back in the top flight.

He said: “I think our players will make a big push for it next season. Being in the Championship gives an excuse not to pick them. It’s a genuine excuse as well, given the level that we are at.

“If they prove themselves at the next level it only strengthens their case.”
