Brewster has the final say at Crawley

Former Dundee United and Inverness manager Craig Brewster has been assured he is the one calling the shots at Crawley following the appointment of Steve Coppell as director of football.

Just 24 hours after Scots manager Steve Evans quit Crawley to take over at League Two rivals Rotherham, the experienced Coppell joined the promotion hopefuls. But Coppell insists he will only offer assistance to caretaker manager Brewster.

The former Manchester City, Reading and Crystal Palace manager said: “All I can say is that, like anyone who has worked with me before, titles have been fairly meaningless. The job has got to get done. Craig is in charge until the end of the season, I am here to assist not just Craig but hopefully the team, to give as much support as I can to get promoted.

“That’s been the objective all season. Craig has got his finger very much on the pulse. I’ll be honest and say I don’t. But I believe I have some expertise that can be of benefit in the closing games of the season.”

Brewster, who was initially appointed Evans’ first-team coach last summer, said: “I’ve got to continue to work with the players, they are the important ones, to work with them to get us over the line. They’ve done a fantastic job for us this season in getting us where we are and we’re certainly up for the fight.”
