Cowdenbeath 3 - 2 Dumbarton: Cowdenbeath comeback

Cowdenbeath lifted themselves off the foot of the Championship in dramatic fashion as they came from a goal down to snatch their first win of the season with an injury-time strike from Kane Hemmings.

The winner came just seconds after Dumbarton keeper Jamie Ewings looked to have earned the Sons a valuable point with a great save from Jordan Morton’s late penalty.

Manager Colin Cameron commented: “It’s a start! Winning is a good habit and losing is a bad habit, so it was important to get a win. But I knew it was never far away and we needed to remain positive.”

In a see-saw encounter, it was the home side who took the early lead. Former Rangers striker Hemmings showed nifty footwork before laying off to Jamie Stevenson and the midfielder’s input was explosive, blasting a superb strike into the roof of the net from just inside the area.

Dumbarton then thought they had turned the match on its head in 13 second-half minutes with two stunning strikes from Chris Turner.

The first saw the midfielder jink away from his marker at the edge of the box and his left-foot drive flew past Grant Adam in the Cowdenbeath goal. The 26-year-old then repeated the feat in the 64th minute with his right foot.

Jon Robertson, enjoying his third “debut” for Cowdenbeath after leaving St Mirren, made a happy return to the club.

With 18 minutes remaining, he robbed dithering defender Aaron Barry of possession and raced clear before chipping over keeper Ewings to make it 2-2 and set up the eventful finale.
