Nathan McSeveney, 20, fell on to a concrete stairwell as almost 60,000 streamed out from Celtic Park in Glasgow. McSeveney, who was from Cumnock in East Ayrshire, was treated at the scene by medics at Exit 33 at the ground.

He was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary but later pronounced dead by doctors.

The tragedy unfolded moments after a euphoric home support celebrated the final whistle after a Shaun Maloney goal 15 minutes from time sealed victory for Scotland. The SFA’s chief led the tributes, tweeting: “One of our young fans died last night after falling through a stairwell coming out of Celtic Park. I’m so sorry for his family. Tragic news.”

Celtic FC also issued a statement on their official website. It read: “Everyone at Celtic Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the death of a young supporter following last night’s match between Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. This was a terrible, tragic incident and our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the young man’s family at this time.”

Police said his death had been an accident and a report would go to the procurator fiscal. A Facebook memorial page was set up for the former Cumnock Academy pupil who worked for an engineering firm.
