Chelsea seal Glasgow City’s Champions League exit

A goal for Eni Aluko midway through the first half doubled Chelsea’s lead from the first leg, and with City needing at least three goals to go through, City coach Scott Booth was forced to go for broke, sending on two attackers for midfield players.

Following a good spell for the home side at the start of the second half, Chelsea hit back with a second and third as the game opened up.

Aluko opened the scoring when she was allowed to run across the City box and fire in a powerful right foot shot.

Booth’s attacking changes were nearly rewarded by a goal for substitute Clare Shine early in the second half. Her effort was a good one but it was more than matched by Hedvig Lindahl’s block, the experienced Swedish international keeper showing why she is one of the best in the world. Despite the early second half pressure, City were soon two further goals in arrears. First, Fran Kirby’s low swerving shot from the edge of the box deceived Lee Alexander. Four minutes later Chelsea went three up following a training ground corner routine. When the ball came into the box central defender Gilly Flaherty headed past Alexander from close range.
