Charlie Nicholas' company liquidated over unpaid debts

The former Celtic player’s firm, Claremont Media Promotions, has been placed into liquidation following a court order.

The move comes after Glasgow Sheriff Court heard an application for a liquidator to be appointed to shut the company down.

The company was used to channel earnings from Nicholas’ career as a football pundit. Accounts show that last year the company owed creditors £110,000.

Liquidator Maureen Leslie of MLM Solutions said: “MLM respects the privacy of all our clients and it is not our policy to comment on individual cases.

“However, I can confirm that all known creditors in this case will be paid in full.”

The former Celtic, Arsenal, Aberdeen and Scotland striker brought in debt management specialists to try to save the company in May and he won a six-week window to keep creditors off his back.

But that ran out in June and a petition to wind up CMP was lodged at the court on June 28.

It’s not known who is behind the legal bid or how much they are owed.

The company was set up in 2013 and known as Charlie Nicholas Promotions until earlier this year. Nicholas owns three-quarters of the shares and his wife Claire the rest.

Accounts for March 2015 show the firm had £33,156 in the bank and were owed £78,938 - but debts of £110,450 had to be cleared within the next 12 months.

Nicholas is the sole director and not on the board of any other companies.

He is believed to earn around £400,000 a year after more than a decade as one of Sky Sports’ football experts.

Glaswegian Nicholas spent eight years at Parkhead over two spells, making his debut in 1980 and scoring 48 goals in the 1982-83 season.

He also played with Arsenal and Aberdeen before retiring in 1996 with Clyde. And he earned 20 Scotland caps, starring in the 1986 World Cup.
