A 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord in their group stage opener in Rotterdam last month – a match which saw Celtic play the final 22 minutes with nine men – was followed by injury-time heartbreak in a 2-1 home loss to Lazio at the start of October.

Those results have left Celtic bottom of Group E without a point from their opening two games, four behind Madrid, who lead the table on goal difference ahead of Lazio, while Feyenoord are in third place on three points.

The situation has led Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers to admit that his side need to take something from the visit of Madrid to progress in Europe. A tall order against a side with recent pedigree in Europe, which includes reaching two Champions League finals and winning the Europa League three times since 2010.

Madrid have also won their last seven games, a run which started with a derby triumph against Real Madrid. They sit fourth in La Liga, three points behind leaders Real, but with a game in hand on the teams above them.

Celtic meanwhile maintained their strong start to their Scottish Premiership title defence with an impressive 4-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.

Celtic v Atletico Madrid previous meetings

The two clubs have a controversial past. Atletico beat Celtic in the 1974 European Cup semi-finals following two brutal encounters. The Spanish side had three men sent off and seven others booked as they fought their way to a goalless first-leg draw in Glasgow with Hoops winger Jimmy Johnstone coming in for some particularly vicious treatment. Celtic’s only yellow card went to Dixie Deans before police had to intervene during a post-match altercation in the tunnel. Celtic fans were advised not to travel to the second leg, which Atletico won 2-0. Atletico also came out on top against Celtic on their way to the final of the 1985-86 European Cup Winners’ Cup and beat the Hoops home and away in the Europa League just before Simeone was appointed.
