• Victor Wanyama claims Celtic can match achievements of Borussia Dortmund next season

• Kenyan defender also says he intends to stay at Celtic next season as he scoops young player of the year award

The Celtic midfielder spoke of his ambition to help the Parkhead side better the efforts that saw them reach the knockout stages of the Champions League.

“Look at a club like Dortmund,” the Kenyan defender said of the side, who will face Bayern Munich in an all-German final at Wembley on Saturday 25 May.

“Borussia Dortmund have come from nowhere and they are a big club now. If we work hard and stick together we can also be like Dortmund, a top club.”

He added: “I believe we can go beyond the last 16 in the Champions League. We were close to doing that but we had a little bit of a problem playing as a team in the knockout stage for the first time. We have learned from our mistakes and next time I believe we can now do better.”

Wanyama, who was yesterday handed the SPL’s young player of the year award, gave tentative assurances over his future at Celtic and said he would be at the club next season, despite long-running speculation of his departure.

“I am still a Celtic player and I am going to be here next season because I still have a contract. I do not want to talk much about this because I still have a contract. At the moment, I am a Celtic player.”
