Tony Watt’s Standard Liege future already in doubt

The former Celtic and Scotland Under-21 striker clinched a £1.2 million move to the Belgian side at the end of July after impressing on loan with Lierse last term.

But he has scored just twice in his spell at Standard and the Pro League club appear to have have lost patience with Watt.

The club’s sports director Axel Lawaree has revealed there will be departures from the under-achieving club in January, with Standard languishing in eight place. Reports in Belgium have stated Watt and team-mate Ronnie Stam will be put up for sale. Lawaree said: “We have promoted several young players at the club and that has meant there is not enough room for other players.

“It is possible that next month will see the departure of players who are not playing or are unhappy with their status at the club.”

Watt, who turns 21 later this month, has started just three games for Standard and has come off the bench ten times. He last scored for the club in October.

The striker, who famously once netted for Celtic against Barcelona in the Champions League, has been a controversial figure. He was axed from Lierse last season after numerous bust-ups with manager Stanley Menzo, he had a frosty relationship with former Celtic manager Neil Lennon and fell out of the Scotland Under-21 picture too after concerns about his attitude.

The Standard Liege manager who signed him, Guy Luzon, was sacked just two months after he signed for the club.

Now he could look to end to his Belgian adventure.
