The Hoops manager told Norwegian TV station TV2 - in an interview translated by STV - that Johansen is ‘allowed to develop’ at Celtic, adding: “[Stefan] is good enough to play in the Premier League but then it is a question of whether he wants it.

“I think Stefan is very fond of Celtic and it’s a much bigger club to play for than for example West Brom.

“Stefan made a wise choice when he chose to go to Celtic. Here he is allowed to develop. He has been playing regularly at a high level.”

Johansen joined Celtic in January 2014 for a fee of around £2 million, signing a three-and-a-half year deal.

He has made 64 appearances for Celtic in all competitions, chipping in with 12 goals in the process.

He had previously been with Ronny Deila at Stromsgodset and, before that, Bodo/Glimt.

While at Godset, he was crowned Norwegian Player of the Year.

He has 15 Norway caps.
