League bosses are understood to be hoping to nail down a strategy to address title wins, promotions, and relegations if a second consecutive campaign is unable to be completed.

The 42 teams will be asked to give their views on a series of questions but the BBC reports a formal ballot will only be held if there is a “consensus of similar opinion”.

The SPFL board lost a vote in July to assume control of the season in the event of a repeat of last season’s shutdown and plans for the consultation were put forward at a meeting of all 42 clubs on Monday.

A number of matches have already fallen victim to coronavirus-related incidents this season.

Motherwell’s last two fixtures were postponed on the day of the game after the opposition teams, Kilmarnock and St Mirren, reported that they were unable to fulfill the fixture owing to a lack of available players.

St Mirren had just eight fit outfield players ahead of their scheduled home match with the Steelmen at the weekend following a number of positive Covid-19 cases.

The Buddies have already been affected by the virus. Earlier this season the club was forced to bring in Hearts goalkeeper Zdenek Zlamal on a last-minute emergency loan in order to fulfill a home match against Hibs after three of the Paisley side’s goalkeepers were advised to self-isolate.
