Scott Brown has faith in Strachan to inspire young Scots

National team manager Gordon Strachan is a matter of weeks away from unveiling the details of his blueprint to restore health to Scottish football, which has been moribund at both club and representative level for decades.

The failure to generate genuine international-class players will be addressed following wide-ranging brainstorming sessions with some legendary figures in the Scottish game.

Strachan has also conferred with his assistant, Motherwell manager Mark McGhee, and the SFA performance director,
Brian McClair.

One person he has yet to consult, however, is his captain, Scott Brown, although the 30-year-old does not feel slighted by that omission.

“He hasn’t asked me,” he revealed. “We haven’t sat down and spoken about it. That’s his job and he loves it.

“When he was at Celtic he had every team at every age group playing in the same way and he wants to do that with Scotland as well. He did that brilliantly at Celtic and everyone has faith in him to do it just as well with the national teams.

“It shows what Scottish football means to him. He enjoys his role and he was even away with the Under-21s the other week, looking to the future and seeing what was coming through.

“It’s one of the great things about him: once he gets a job he gives it 100 per cent and, like the players, he’s fully committed to Scotland. That’s why we love working with him .He gives absolutely everything.”

Brown is also encouraged by the number of talented footballers beginning to emerge from the Celtic academy. “Aidan Nesbitt has had a bit of publicity recently and he’s been flying,” he said. “He’s been pushing to get into the first-team squad and played against Raith Rovers in the League Cup.

Kieran Tierney has also been doing really well and gained good experience in our Europa League games. It’s good for the senior players to have youngsters pushing us on because that makes us better. We have an Old v Young match at Lennoxtown every Friday and that’s becoming more and more competitive – the games are getting closer.”
