Saidy Janko can play Champions League role - Deila

CELTIC manager Ronny Deila has admitted that the door is open for Swiss teenager Saidy Janko to walk into his Celtic team for the crucial Champions League qualifiers.

The 19-year-old will complete his move from Manchester United today when he has a medical with a compensation fee due to the Old Trafford club.

And, even although Celtic are well off for right backs with Mikael Lustig, Adam Matthews and Darnell Fisher, Deila feels Janko has the potential to break into the team.

He said: “Janko is a young player we think we can develop and I’m looking forward to seeing him in training.

“We will see if he becomes a first-team player – you never know. We will see what he’s like in training first. The road is there if he shows he is the best. He is a full-back. He can move in but his best position is right-back.”

Janko played 10 times for Neil Lennon’s Bolton last season having gone on loan at the end of the January transfer window – and scored on his debut a 3-1 win over Fulham.

His only appearance for Manchester United was in the infamous 4-0 defeat by MK Dons in last season’s Capital One Cup.

The Celtic fans may see him in Saturday’s Dukla Prague friendly but they got their first look at Dedryck Boyata in last night’s 2-0 win over Den Bosch as the Belgian strolled through 60 minutes. Deila said: “He played with calmness. He has a very good understanding of the game and a very good touch on the ball. He is quick and good in the air. I think he will be a very good signing for us.”

The Celtic boss would not discuss the failure to agree a deal with Dundee United striker Nadir Ciftci but admitted that he is looking to strengthen in that area. He said: “We will see if we get some more in. We are working hard in that way but we have a lot of consistency in the team so the players who are here are the most important ones.

“But if we can add some more then that would be good too. We are looking at the striking situation, so we will see what happens. I don’t want to comment on any names.”

Overall Deila was pleased with the workout and Tom Rogic, in particular, after the Australian’s injury woes over the past two years.

He said: “He’s a great player. He works really hard. He has been very unlucky for the last year with injuries. Now we have control of his body and you can see what kind of player he is. He’s very hungry to show what is in him.”
