Claims Zenit paid off referees

UEFA are probing claims that Zenit St Petersburg were guilty of European match fixing around the time they defeated Rangers in the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

The accusations have been made by the Russian club’s former Norwegian internationalist Erik Hagen in a newspaper interview.

Hagen says he and his team mates paid £1,800 each from their win bonus to a referee to secure a favourable outcome in a UEFA Cup tie. (Express)

Turnbull Hutton stands by Rangers comments

Raith Rovers chairman says it was right that Rangers were made to restart in the bottom tier of Scottish football adding that “history will show what happened was probably right for the game”.

Hibs fans try to stop Hearts rescue deal

Lithuanian administrators have been inundated with emails from Hibs fans confirming internet rumours. A spokesman said that there “had been a lot of them from private individuals”.

The emails are believed to have been an attempt to influence a vote by creditors on Monday which will decide if the Tynecastle club will be liquidated. (Mail)

Lennon ‘deserves’ manager of the year title

Celtic defender Efe Ambrose says his boss Neil Lennon should be recognised as Scotland’s Manager of the Year by his fellow professionals after guiding the Parkhead side to their third title in a row.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is a rival for the title having guided the Dons to their first trophy in 19 years this season however Ambrose believes the comprehensive nature of Celtic’s league victory means Lennon is deserving of the title. (Scotsman)

O’Connor ‘hopeless’ and ‘unfit’ says Morton chairman

Morton chairman Douglas Rae has slated former Hibs striker Garry O’Conner for his lack of fitness and branded his role in the club’s relegation battle as ‘hopeless’.

The ex-Birmingham player has scored just one goal in 11 games for the Cappielow club. (Scotsman)

Hearts can be force in Premiership again

Ryan Stevenson insists Hearts can be a force in the top flight of Scottish football again and has backed the Tynecastle club to bounce straight back from relegation.

St Mirren only need one more point from their remaining games to assure their survival and send Hearts down. (Scotsman)
