FIFA to investigate Suarez

FIFA are to investigate Luis Suarez after claims he bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini on the left shoulder, during last night’s 1-0 Uruguay win. It is thought the player could face a two year world wide ban should he be found guilty. It is the third time the player has been caught up in a biting controversy but the player continued to protest his innocence, he said: “These situations happen on the field. I had contact with his shoulder nothing more.”

However, Chiellini was in no doubt as to what happened, he said: “Suarez is a sneak and he gets away with it because FIFA want their big stars to play in the World Cup. I would love to see if they have the courage to use video evidence against him.”

FIFA vice president George Boyce confirmed that though he hadn’t seen the incident personally, the governing body would be looking into it. he said: “FIFA must investigate the incident seriously and take whatever disciplinary action deemed necessary.” (Various)

Stubbs searches for Hibernian’s assistant manager

Alan Stubbs, confirmed as Hibernian’s new manager yesterday, is on the hunt for an assistant manager after it was revealed that David Unsworth, his number two at Everton has declined the offer to join Stubbs north of the border. Stubbs said: “This is a massive club with huge potential and to be given this opportunity is a privilege and real honour. I’m excited about the future at Hibernian and what we can all achieve together.” (Sun)

He has also vowed to win over doubting fans with a swashbuckling style of football.

“We will play football,” he insisted after meeting the players for the first time, “that is fundamental to me. I want the ball on the ground but I also want to win games. I don’t want to get the two mixed up.” (Mail)

Lustig impressed by new manager Ronny Deila

Mikael Lustig reckons Ronny Deila can rocket Celtic into the last 16 of the Champion’s League. The full back is convinced the new man in charge can negotiate the qualifying rounds to join the big boys in the group stages and then attempt a repeat of 2012 when Neil Lennon’s men reached the knock out stages. Lustig said: “Atletico Madrid showed last season what smaller clubs can achieve. They have more money than us but not much compared to teams like Chelsea yet they won La Liga and got to the Champion’s League final.”

Lustig met his new manager for the first time yesterday and was impressed by what he had to say to the team, he said: “My first impression is of a real professional who’s very organised. He spoke about football, about how he wants us to play and how he wants us to be as people.” (Record)

Tributes pour in for David Taylor

Tributes poured in last night for ‘astute,forward-thinking and passionate’ former Scottish FA chief executive David Taylor; who died yesterday. It was confirmed that the 60-year-old died after taking ill. Taylor became the first chief executive of the SFA in 1999, succeeding long serving secretary Jim Farry. Last night Campbell Ogilvie paid warm tribute, he said: “On behalf of his friends and former colleagues at the SFA, and throughout Scottish football in general I would like to express our profound sadness at the tragic news of David’s death.”

Stewart Regan who took on the role of chief executive following Taylor’s departure to UEFA tweeted: “So sorry to hear that my predecessor; David Taylor, has died aged 60. A top bloke. Really feel for Cathy, James and Allan. RIP David.”

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawell added: “David was a fine man and a personal friend of mine and someone who made a great contribution to the game of football, both in Scotland and across Europe.” (Express)

Barry Ferguson believes Boyd can win Rangers title

Barry Ferguson believes the capture of Kris Boyd will secure Rangers the title. The new Clyde boss believes Boyd’s goals will leave Hearts and Hibs trailing, he said: “Rangers need a goal scorer and Kris will guarantee 20 a season. Goals will win you championships and Boydy and Kenny Miller are a great partnership.”

Ferguson added that he believes that Boyd has improved his game since his previous stint at Ibrox, saying: “I watched him a few times at Kilmarnock last season and rangers are getting a better player than they had last time. His overall game has improved. He would always get goals but his link up play and movement off the ball has improved.” (Sun)
