Alex Ferguson praises new Aberdeen side

Sir Alex Ferguson has praised a new resilience and mentality apparent, according to him, among Derek McIness’ table-topping team after he watched them beat Celtic last month with only 10 men. “There is purpose in that team,” said Ferguson. “I watched the game against Celtic recently, and even with ten men, they were the better team. And they were the better team because they believed they could win it.” (Scotsman)

Rangers manager Mark Warburton has warned his club that their own overconfidence could be their undoing in their quest to become Scottish Championship winners – and he brought up a recent example of an Ibrox staffer to make his point. “Someone said upstairs that if you win on Saturday you’ve won the league. That’s absolute nonsense. Complacency is the biggest weapon against us,” said Warburton. “It’s a big game because they are the nearest team to us so we want a big performance, but the biggest danger to us is us and that’s not being arrogant. Ronny Deila admits he will have to rebuild the confidence of “sad” Efe Ambrose following his Europa League nightmare against Fenerbahce on Thursday night. Celtic manager Ronny Deila insists Efe Ambrose retains his faith despite the latest costly error from the Nigerian defender. “Efe has made mistakes before and he is an experienced boy who has been to big games and to the World Cup,” said Deila. “I am not afraid of playing him.” (Scotsman)

Alan Irvine is being interviewed about the Dundee United manager’s job, vacated by Jackie McNamara, who was axed after a string of poor results. Irvine, a former United player, has been out of a job since being sacked by West Bromwich Albion last December. Former Rangers manager Stuart McCall and Mixu Paatelainen are also understood to be in the running for the post at Tannadice. (The Scottish Sun)

Why play Efe Ambrose, asks Chris Sutton

“There’s not much point hammering the player when that is what he does,” Chris Sutton, former Celtic striker, wrote today in his Daily Record column. “I would question the decision for him to be there in the first place.” Sutton said the Celtic defender was ultimately not to blame for a string of errors and gaffes over the course of his Celtic career, and instead pinned the blame on the club’s management for continuing to show faith in him.
