David Moyes ‘not up to Everton job’, says John Hartson

Incoming Manchester United manager David Moyes is “ordinary” and is incapable of handling his new position, John Hartson has claimed.

The former Celtic and Arsenal striker, writing in The Sun, gave a withering assessment of Moyes’ abilities as he said Manchester United would come to regret the outgoing Everton manager’s appoinment.

“[Manchester United] needs a great manager, not an ordinary one. They need someone steeped in success, not knee-deep in mediocrity.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing against the man. Moyes probably got the best out of what he had at Everton. But I don’t see him as this management messiah everyone is making him out to be.”

Meanwhile, Moyes’ first target is rumoured to be Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, available for £30m, as Wayne Rooney’s future looks increasingly unclear. (The Sun)

Neil Alexander holds out for Rangers contract

Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander has insisted that he remains keen to stay at Ibrox, while admitting that he may have played his last game for the club. The 35-year-old is a free agent next week and a stalemate still exists over the length of contract and the terms offered. Alexander is holding out for a two-year contract, but Rangers have been unwilling to meet all of his demands.

Alexander said: “It wasquite emotional for me after the game last weekend because I knew it could be my last at Rangers.

“Things are exactly as they’ve always been. The offer to me is still on the table and that offer was made in February.

“I need to go away and think about it and what’s best both for my family and myself, but I’m desperate to stay.” (The Sun)

David Moyes to have say over Neil Lennon appointment

Neil Lennon may be given the green light for the Everton job - by David Moyes. The Scot, who will take over from Sir Alex Ferguson, admitted that he will have a say in who lands the manager’s hotseat at Goodison Park as rumours grow that Lennon is among the candidates.

Moyes said: “The chairman asked me about a successor and I will help Everton as much as I can. Walter Smith recommended me for the job when I came here and if there is anything I can do to help Everton and Bill Kenwright I will be more than happy to do so.”

He added: “It is a well-run club and this is a great opportunity.”

Meanwhile, the Daily Express claim that, should Neil Lennon be tempted away from Celtic, then free agent Owen Coyle would be the top target to replace him at Parkhead. (Daily Record, Daily Express)

Nicky Clark a step closer to Rangers

Queen of the South striker Nicky Clark has edged close to joining Rangers as the prolific hitman held talks with Ally McCoist for the first time.

The 41-goal striker said: “I met Ally McCoist and we had a good chat but there’s definitely nothing done yet. I was impressed with what he said and I’ll weigh everything up.” (Daily Record)
