‘Scandal’ of Rangers’ Newcastle loans

RANGERS will have to pay Newcastle £500,000 if they gain promotion to the Scottish Premiership this season under the terms of the loan agreement which saw five players move to Ibrox, three of whom will likely never appear for the first-team.

This latest financial blow was revealed yesterday in the club’s interim results in which Rangers reported losses after tax of £2.89 million for the six-month period to 31 December 2014.

The figures were termed “disappointing” by interim chairman Paul Murray. But it is the detail regarding those players recruited from Newcastle in January that was described as “beyond belief” by one supporters’ representative.

Drew Roberton, general secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association, described the situation as “a scandal”. He said that he hoped the current board might be able to contest the payment should McCall’s team succeed in their aim to return to the Premiership. (Various)

Henderson completes Rosenborg loan move

CELTIC youngster Liam Henderson has joined Norwegian side Rosenborg on a three-month loan deal.

The 18-year-old midfielder, who has made 22 appearances for the first-team and scored twice since making his Celtic debut last season, joined the Trondheim-based team on the final day of the Norwegian transfer window.

Hearts take Merida on trial

HEARTS have taken former Atletico Madrid youth player Alvaro Merida on a week’s trial as they look to enhance their squad for the Premiership.

The 22-year-old - who can play as a striker or attacking midfielder - will spend the week training with the Jambos as he bids to win a contract.

Merida has been capped by Spain at under-16 and under-17 level and reportedly had to turn down a move to Manchester City in 2008 because of school commitments.

However, more recently, he has fallen down the divisions in Spain and is now seeking to kick-start his career in Scottish football. (The Scotsman)

Stubbs keen to tie up out-of-contract Hibs stars

HIBS head coach Alan Stubbs insists he hopes to stave off interest in his current squad by agreeing new deals with players “as quickly as possible”.

Mark Oxley, currently on loan from Hull City but out of contract in the summer, is the latest to be linked with another club after Sheffield Wednesday were credited with an interest in the keeper, who Hibs are keen to hold on to.

The likes of Lewis Stevenson, Liam Craig, Scott Robertson, Fraser Fyvie, Liam Fontaine and Tomas Cerny are also approaching the end of their current agreements, while loans for Keith Watson and Dylan McGeouch will expire at the end of the campaign. (The Scotsman)
