No manager 'would touch Celtic job with a bargepole' if Neil Lennon was sacked

Celebrity Celtic die-hard Rod Stewart believes no manager worth his salt with go near the manager’s job at Parkhead with “a bargepole”.

The singer reckons the club’s board would be best just to stick with Neil Lennon in the hope he could turn things around.

The Scottish champions are in crisis at the moment as yesterday’s defeat to Ross County in the Betfred Cup saw this dismal recent run stretch to one win in ten matches.

The loss also ended Celtic’s domination over the rest of the country in the three major honours. The last time they lost a domestic cup match was the April, 2016 defeat to rivals Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

Couple this with the sizeable lead Rangers currently hold in the Scottish Premiership table and there is a feeling that this campaign could see a real shift in the balance of power when it had looked like Celtic would net a historic 10th successive title.

And Stewart thinks a lot of managers will be too hesitant to get involved with so much at stake.

He told talkSPORT: "Unless there is someone lined up to take Lenny's place I don't think anybody would take it with a bargepole, I really wouldn't.

"Taking over Celtic, halfway through the season, 11 points behind Rangers, it's got to take a tough man to do it.

"I would let Lenny finish the season, I still think he can turn it around. More players have got to come in. But I am shocked, shocked, shocked.

"I don't think there's anyone who can take his place. I don't think the guy from Bournemouth would touch it, I really don't."

Stewart was also quick to condemn the Celtic supporters who hurled abuse and missiles at the management and players as they left Celtic Park following Sunday’s 2-0 loss.

He said: "I am heartbroken and disgusted. All my years of supporting the Celts I've never seen anything like that, missiles being thrown at the players, it's shameful it makes the club look so irresponsible.

"It's a proud old club and I'm absolutely heartbroken not only with the result yesterday but all round."
