The 28-year-old Greek international is out of contract at the end of the season and has been offered a new deal, but has also been linked with a host of clubs across Europe.

Celtic are keen to learn Samaras’ intentions so the club can finalise its plans for the remainder of the January transfer window.

Lennon said: “We need an answer because that will define how the rest of the month will pan out.

“We’ve given him time and he’s been a great servant. It’s been a tough few months for him.

“But he’s had an opportunity to go home now, clear his head and come to a decision.”

Spanish high-fliers Atletico Madrid are reportedly front-runners for Samaras’ signature, with teams from England, Italy and Turkey also linked with the attacker.

Lennon acknowledged that Samaras is in demand. He said: “There is other interest in him. I’ve not had direct contact with any club but there is interest.

“We’re hoping it’s not a case of him staying now and going in the summer.”
