It is understood a picture message with racist connotations which was posted online just before the Don’s 4-0 defeat at the weekend is at the centre of the police probe.

A police spokeswoman said: “We can can confirm we have received a complaint about a tweet and inquiries are ongoing.”

In a separate incident, a 19-year-old man from Aberdeen was charged on Monday night with posting alleged “offensive comments” online about young Celtic fan Jay Beatty.

The teenager is expected to appear in court later this month.

And a second police probe was launched on Tuesday after Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths was the target of alleged sectarian abuse on Twitter.

Another Aberdeen man, believed to be the owner of the Twitter account from which the message was sent, was suspended from his work on Tuesday as a result of the tweet.

Police confirmed yesterday that inquiries are ongoing into the second case.
