Brown ban could go up, warn UEFA

CELTIC have been warned that Scott Brown’s three-match UEFA ban for kicking Barcelona striker Neymar could be increased if the club lose an appeal.

The club are still to determine whether to formally lodge a complaint, but UEFA have confirmed that the ban could be upped in the event of an appeal. (Record)

Moyes: “I tried to get Rooney for Scotland too”

MANCHESTER United manager David Moyes has admitted that he tried to convince Wayne Rooney to play for Scotland.

Former Scotland manager Berti Vogts, now in charge of Azerbaijan, revealed last week talks with the 16-year-old Rooney. At the time, both Moyes and Vogts were of the mistaken belief one of Rooney’s grandparents hailed from Scotland.

Moyes said: “I was desperate to get him to play for Scotland. Unfortunately Berti and myself couldn’t convince him and as it turned out, his roots and where he came from made him very much English.” (Scotsman)

‘Give McCoist some credit’ says assistant

RANGERS assistant manager Kenny McDowall has called for Ally McCoist to receive more plaudits for his role at Ibrox.

McDowall said: “A lot of people are giving it him in the neck, saying he’s got too much to say. Well, if Ally hasn’t been saying it, who is going to be saying it?

“He’s trying to keep supporters informed in what is going on at the place, while looking after the football side as well. And some day he’ll get credit.” (Scotsman)

van Dijk can win Dutch cap - Lennon

CELTIC defender Virgil van Dijk can force his way into the Netherlands national side, according to his manager Neil Lennon.

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal will be present when Celtic take on the Dutch champions Ajax this week, with Lennon backing his man to make an impression.

Lennon said: “I’d like to think Virgil would get a chance with his country.

“I think it is inevitable that if he keeps going and progressing the way he is now he will become a Dutch international.” (Sun)

HEARTS have agreed a fundraising friendly against Bundesliga cracks Vfl Wolfsburg for 13 November.

Wolfsburg’s squad includes Brazil caps Diego, Naldo and Luiz Gustavo, as well as Croatian international striker Ivica Olic.

United’s Souttar told to ditch Sunderland

JOHN Souttar should stay at Dundee United rather than move to the English premiership side, according to a former United man whose move down south failed to pan out.

Former Dundee United and Sunderland midfielder Richie Ryan said: “If he goes to England he’ll be back playing youth and reserve football.

“He’s making great strides in his career, I wouldn’t say going to Sunderland, even though it’s the Premiership and the money would be great, is good for his development.”

Souttar is considering a move after the two clubs agreed a £600,000 transfer fee. (Sun)

Billy McKay named Player of the Month

INVERNESS Caley striker Billy McKay has won the SPFL Player of the Month award for September.
