Nicolas Fedor, Efe Ambrose and Lubos Kamenar in for Celtic as Neil Lennon bolsters squad with triple swoop

CELTIC secured the signings of three players last night after a hectic deadline-day recruitment drive ahead of their forthcoming Champions League campaign.

Venezuelan striker Nicolas Fedor, Nigerian defender Efe Ambrose and Slovakian goalkeeper Lubos Kamenar all checked in before the 11pm transfer window closure for Scottish Premier League clubs.

Celtic have indicated they still hope to add another striker to their squad before Monday night’s Uefa deadline for players to be registered in time for the Champions League. Clubs are allowed to sign out-of-contract players beyond the closure of the domestic transfer window.

Former Valencia front man Fedor, generally known by his nickname ‘Miku’, is the highest profile of last night’s signings. He agreed to join Celtic on a season-long loan from Spanish club Getafe. The 27-year-old, capped 40 times for Venezuela, scored 12 goals in 40 games for Getafe in La Liga last season. With Anthony Stokes expected to be sidelined by injury for another six weeks, Fedor’s arrival will bolster Celtic manager Neil Lennon’s attacking resources as he juggles domestic commitments with the Champions League group stage campaign over the coming months. While primarily a central striker, Fedor has also been deployed as a right-sided attacking midfielder.

Goalkeeper Kamenar, 25, has also joined on a season-long loan from French club Nantes and will provide back-up for first choice Fraser Forster and current deputy Lukasz Zaluska. Like Fedor, the loan deal for Slovak international Kamenar includes an option for Celtic to make the move permanent.

Lennon also strengthened his central defensive options with the capture of Nigerian international Ambrose. The 23-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Scottish champions after they agreed an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £1 million, with his Israeli club FC Ashdod. Lennon had prioritised the signing of a new centre-half following the close season departures of experienced duo Daniel Majstorovic and Glenn Loovens.

Ambrose will not be available to make his debut against Hibs at Celtic Park today as his move is subject to international clearance being received. He will have no difficulty obtaining a work permit as he has been a regular in the Nigerian national team over the past two years.

He is due to join up with his country for their Africa Cup

of Nations qualifier in Liberia next week, before returning

to Glasgow in time for Celtic’s SPL fixture at St Johnstone on

15 September.

Ambrose, who won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics with Nigeria, can also operate at right-back or as a holding midfield player. He is confident his versatility, and the experience he gained in his three years in Israel, will prove valuable.

“I am the kind of player who plays where it is of benefit to the team,” said Ambrose.
