Celtic 'pressing' to sign Serie A winger that could see Arne Engels record transfer fee broken again

Danish attacker back on Celtic’s radar

Celtic have reportedly revived their interest in Lazio winger Gustav Isaksen but may have to break their club transfer record again to land him.

The Danish international was on Celtic's transfer radar in the summer over a possible loan move with option to buy but he opted against the switch in order to stay and fight for his place with the Serie A side.

Isaksen has featured in 24 matches for the Rome outfit this season, contributing three goals and three assists, but is not a regular starter, with half of his appearances coming off the bench. He also made his breakthrough with the Denmark national side during the recent Nations League campaign, scoring twice in six caps.

According to Italian outlet Radio Sei, Celtic are "pressing" to sign the pacy 23-year-old in January but Lazio would prefer to wait until the summer window with Bologna and unnamed English Premier League clubs also credited with an interest.

The report claims that Lazio have placed a £12.5million price tag on the player as they look to make a profit on the £10m plus add-ons they paid when acquiring him from Danish club Midtjylland in August 2023.

That would require Celtic to break their transfer record for the second window in succession after splashing out £11m on the signing of Arne Engels from German side Augsburg, as well as recruiting Adam Idah from Norwich for £9m, in the summer.

Isaksen registered 33 goals and 18 assists in 139 appearances for Midtjylland while his overall contribution across 18 months at Lazio is six goals and seven assists in 61 appearances.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to strengthen in the wide areas with Luis Palma currently out of favour and Hyun-jun Yang struggling to convince despite increased first-team exposure in recent weeks.

A deal to bring Kieran Tierney back to Celtic is also ongoing, with the Arsenal left-back expected to agree a pre-contract move that would see him rejoin the Parkhead club, with a January loan move also possible.
