Johannes Edvaldsson, two-time Scottish football champion with Celtic, dies at age of 70

The Icelandic international spent almost five years in Glasgow. He was a popular figure with both team-mates and supporters, earning the nickname “Shuggie” and was noted for coming up with the goods in big moments against rivals Rangers.

He was noted for his incredible versatility, playing in almost every position on the park and once finished a season as joint-top scorer despite being largely utilised in central defence during his time with the club.

Edvaldsson helped Celtic to two league titles and one Scottish Cup. He made 188 appearances for the Hoops, scoring 36 goals.

After leaving for MLS side Tulsa Roughnecks in 1980 he returned to Scottish football two years later for a 24-month stint with Motherwell.

After retiring to his native land he retired a year later. He represented his country 34 times, scoring twice.
