Gordon Strachan's son to join Celtic coaching staff

Gavin Strachan, the son of former Celtic manager Gordon, is set to take up a coaching position with the Glasgow club.

The 41-year-old will leave his current post at Peterborough United, where he is assistant manager to Darren Ferguson, in order to move to his new role within Neil Lennon’s backroom staff at Parkhead.

It follows the recent departure of Celtic first-team coach Damien Duff for family reasons after he was appointed assistant to Stephen Kenny with the Republic of Ireland national side.

Barry Fry, Peterborough’s director of football, confirmed Strachan’s exit.

“I have agreed a deal with Celtic’s lawyer and Gavin has also agreed a deal with the club,” said Fry.

“We don’t want to lose him but we cannot stand in the way of such a big job. The deal should be completed on Monday.

“Darren has indentified replacements but they are all currently in work and we will probably wait until we know when the new season will start before making a move.”

Strachan previously managed English non-league side Ilkeston, and also spent three years assisting Ferguson at Doncaster Rovers.

He began his playing career at Coventry City where his father had taken over as player-manager in 1996.

He was loaned out to Dundee in 1998, making nine appearances, before embarking on a journeyman career in the English lower leagues with clubs such as Southend United, Peterborough and Notts County.

He also earned eight caps for the Scotland Under-21s but never progressed to the senior side.

Much of his coaching career has been spent working alongside Ferguson, the son of Scottish football great, Sir Alex.

Gordon Strachan managed Celtic between 2005 and 2009, winning three consecutive league titles, two League Cups and a Scottish Cup, and also reaching the last 16 of the Champions League twice.
