Gordon Strachan: Old Firm set for Euro League

• Scotland boss envisages 38-team European league with Old Firm taking part

The former Celtic boss is certain that the Old Firm will leave Scottish football as he spoke at a Q&A in Manchester.

And he warned Scottish football that it had better be prepared for the Glasgow duo’s departure.

“Sorry if I’m killing everyone’s dream,” Strachan began, “but I’ve said over the last ten years I think that’s the way it’s going to go.

“I think they will end up in European leagues. In ten years’ time, I think there will be two European leagues where the big players and owners from all around the world will just decide.

“Celtic and Rangers will be in it, that’s the way I see it going. I think that is the future and the way it will go.

“Perhaps 38 teams will berak away and the owners will try and coral the sponsorship and look after it that way.”

“Until then, we can generate some mony and make sure Scottish football is healthy before that day comes.”

However, SFA chief Stewart Regan, who was also present at the Soccerex Football Forum in Manchester, said: “If we spent as much time promoting our own game and developing our own players as we do on trying to create exit strategies, we’d be world class.”

Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie, whio also took part in the Q&A, added: “You can tell Gordon’s not in charge of policy at the SFA.”
