The former Newcastle United goalie is named alongside Manchester City’s Joe Hart, and Ben Foster of West Bromwich Albion as Hodgson’s men between the sticks.

To date, Forster has made just one appearance for England, in their 2-0 friendly defeat to Chile at Wembley in November 2013, having been involved in the international set-up since October 2012.

His cap against the South Americans made him just the second player in history to win an England cap while playing for Celtic.

Forster was also called up to the squads to face San Marino, Montenegro, Moldova and Ukraine.

Celtic Park team mate Virgil van Dijk - still hanging onto hopes of a call-up for the Netherlands - tweeted his congratulations, posting: “Yesss fras @FraseForster #welldeserved.”

Forster joins Georgios Samaras (Greece), Efe Ambrose (Nigeria) and Emilio Izaguirre (Honduras) at the tournament in Brazil.

Celtic manager, Neil Lennon said: “Fraser deserves to be in it as he’s good enough and his performances over the last three seasons have just improved all the time. It’s a huge feather in his cap and great for the club.”

Forster tweeted: “Thank you for all the messages! Delighted to be part of the England World Cup squad.”
