Championship side Wigan Athletic have entered administration, becoming the first team in the top four divisions of England to do so during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Latics now face a 12-point deduction which would take them to the bottom of the Championship.

The club had only recently been taken over by a Hong Kong-based consortium.

Since the resumption of the Championship Wigan had won three, keeping three clean sheets in the process, to lift them to 14th in the table. A 12-point penalty, which is automatic for sides falling into administration, would leave them four points adrift.

Joint administrator: “Our immediate objectives are to ensure the club completes all its fixtures this season and to urgently find interested parties to save Wigan Athletic and the jobs of the people who work for the club."

The club have a number of Scottish players, or players who have previously played in Scotland, on their books.

Perhaps the most notable is David Marshall who has been linked with a return to Celtic after Fraser Forster’s move from Southampton fell through.

The Scotland international goalkeeper is the club’s No.1, playing behind a defence which includes former Motherwell star Cedric Kipre.

Also in Wigan’s squad is former Scotland and Celtic left-back Danny Fox as well as a host of ex-Rangers players, including Lewis Macleod, Joe Garner, Josh Windass and Kal Naismith.
