The England internationalist, who won plaudits for his performances for Sheffield United last season during another loan spell, has been unable to unseat David de Gea as United’s first-choice ‘keeper.

Henderson has played just three times for United; once in Europe and twice in the EFL Cup. If rumours are to be believed, Celtic are already seeking a replacement for summer signing Vasilis Barkas. The former AEK Athens goalie lost his place to Scott Bain after suffering an injury and hasn’t won it back, with pundits predicting the Hoops will be eyeing a ‘keeper in Januar.

Henderson was close to joining Aston Villa on loan during the summer before being convinced to remain in Manchester but United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to be happy to let his No.2 ‘keeper head out on another loan to aid his development.

The former Norwegian international striker has already indicated that he views Henderson as a future Old Trafford No.1 and may feel another loan spell and the prospect of European football would benefit the Cumbria-born player.

Solskjaer has Sergio Romero available to play back-up to de Gea although the Argentine goalie was keen to leave United during the summer.

Another strand to the rumour is that England boss Gareth Southgate is believed to have told the 23-year-old that he needs to be playing regularly to have a hope of snatching the No.1 spot for his country from Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford.

According to 90min, Henderson is now eyeing a loan move in January, with Celtic mentioned as a possible destination. Reports in Hampshire have also suggested Celtic could attempt to sign Fraser Forster for a fifth time, with the Englishman yet to make an appearance for Southampton. He has been an unused sub for the Saints’ eight league games so far and one EFL Cup clash with Alex McCarthy preferred.

Forster impressed on loan at Celtic last season and was tipped to return in some capacity but the Hoops were unable to strike a deal for their former shot-stopper and brought in Barkas with Bain as back-up.
