Celtic’s Tony Watt hits back over Lierse fat jibes

The on-loan Celtic forward was stung by criticism from Lierse manager Stanley Menzo, who claimed he was unfit.

Watt netted his second goal in two games in a Belgian Cup success over minnows Lommel United. He celebrated by whipping off his top to show off his torso in response to the criticism he has received.

Watt explained: “I just wanted to show that I am not fat. I knew perfectly well that if I took my top off I would get a yellow card – it happens all over the world.

“But I just wanted to show everyone that I am in prime condition. I am not too fat and I wanted to prove this.”

Coach Menzo had complained about the Scotland under-21 international’s physical condition. He said: “I spoke to Tony and told him what he needed to do to get fit and to become better. I think he has talent. But he has to do more with that talent.”

Meanwhile, Gary Hooper has recalled how he came good at Celtic after a frustrating start to life Glasgow – and hopes that is how it will pan out at Norwich City.

Two months after arriving in a £5.2 million move from Parkhead, Hooper marked his full debut for the Canaries with a brace in Tuesday’s 3-2 Capital One Cup extra-time win at Watford. The 25-year-old missed the start of the English Premier League side’s campaign after picking up a shin injury but hopes his midweek brace sets the tone for a successful time at the club.

Hooper, who was hampered by injury when he signed for Celtic in summer 2010 but went on to score 82 goals north of the Border, said: “It’s been frustrating, but I had a calf injury when I first signed for Celtic and it worked out all right there – and it’s working out all right here.

“If I can just keep scoring like I did at Celtic, then it will be a good few years.

“The ball from Nathan Redmond for my first goal was on the money. I thought it was the only chance I had. And my second, it was a great ball by Leroy Fer.”
