The 15-year-old is reported to have stayed in Munich for several days as he and his agent spoke to the Bundesliga giants.

Liverpool had previously been Odegaard’s first choice but it is now thought he will pledge his long term future to the German club, though he will not officially make a decision until after his 16th birthday tomorrow.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “We will try very hard to sign him and I think we have a good chance. “He is an absolutely exceptional talent and a good guy, very mature for his age.”

Celtic manager Ronny Deila had hoped to persuade his young compatriot to join Celtic after the two formed a special bond during his time in charge at Stromgodset.

That began to look unlikely last week as Liverpool and Bayern Munich joined the race to sign the highly rated youngster.

Odegaard made international headlines in August last year, making his international debut for Norway at the age of just 15 and attracting attention from clubs around Europe.
