Speculation on social media started immediately after the team for Saturday’s match with Hibernian was named and Turnbull was missing from the squad.

Celtic soon confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: ““Following David Turnbull's return from international duty, we can confirm that David has tested positive for COVID-19.

“He will be required to self-isolate for 10 days and will receive every support from the club.

“Get well soon @10DavidTurnbull.”

It was revealed earlier on Saturday that 11 Scotland under-21 players had been affected by the global pandemic after returning from international duty.

Livingston goalkeeper Robby McCrorie, on loan from Rangers, has also contracted the virus while an unnamed Aberdeen player is also said to have it.

A further eight players and two members of the backroom staff have been forced into isolation due to their close contact with those who’ve tested positive.

This looks likely to include Motherwell pair Allan Campbell and Barry Maguire, who are missing from their squad to face St Johnstone on Saturday.

Hibs defender Ryan Porteous and Ross County goalkeeper Ross Doohan are unaffected as both start for their respective teams.

Turnbull was a second-half substitute as Scot Gemmill’s under-21s side narrowly lost out on a place at the European Championships in 2021 following a 1-0 loss in Greece.

The 21-year-old moved from Motherwell to Celtic this summer for an undisclosed fee. He has made six appearances for Neil Lennon’s men, though they’ve all come in the Scottish Premiership and he has made only one start.
