Celtic ponder move for Ajax striker Sigthorsson

NEIL Lennon could be set to add to his squad - by luring a player from one of Celtic’s rival Champions League teams.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson currently plays for Ajax, and was reportedly watched by the Celtic manager last week during a trip to the Netherlands.

The 23-year-old Iceland striker started out at homeland side HK Kópavogur, before moving to AZ Alkmaar, where he scored 15 goals in 32 appearances.

Since joining Ajax in 2011, Sigthorsson has scored 17 goals in 34 games despite suffering minor injury problems since his £4 million move from AZ.

Ajax are understood to be happy to let the striker leave, but are keen to recoup the transfer fee they paid to secure the services of the hitman who helped them to back-to-back Dutch league titles.

Sigthorsson, who has netting 11 goals in 17 international appearances could use a switch to Celtic as a stepping stone to England. The attacker was on Newcastle’s radar two years ago, but the Magpies chose not to follow up their interest in Sigthorsson.

His strike rate is one of the most impressive in Europe, and the recent transfer of Dutch winger and former team-mate Derk Boerrigter to the Scottish champions could be pivotal in selling Sigthorsson on a move to Scotland.
